European Compost Network (ECN), la organización del compost europea

La European Compost Network (ECN) es una organización que desde 2008 reúne a todos los profesionales europeos relacionados con el tratamiento biológico de residuos orgánicos, ya sea compostaje, digestión anaerobia, etc. La finalidad de la misma es servir como nexo de unión y foro de discusión que permita a todos los implicados (políticos, investigadores, representantes de mundo empresarial, etc.) aunar esfuerzos en las políticas de reciclaje de los residuos orgánicos. 

The European Compost Network is the leading European membership organisation promoting sustainable recycling practices in composting, anaerobic digestion and other bio- logical treatment processes of organic resources. Our purpose is to work with practitioners, researchers, technicians and policy makers to deliver integrated organic waste recycling solutions that generate high quality products for the benefit of the environment and the users of the recycled products. It serves as central resource and network for the organic waste recycling sector in Europe, as well as the emerging bio-based economy.

ECN’s vision is a Europe in which all organic resources are recycled to land sustain- ably and/or used to generate renewable energy to benefit the global and local environment, to contribute towards sustainable agriculture, improve human health and benefit European market. To achieve this, effective recycling in all member states should be built on separately collected organic wastes, trained operators for biological processing. Involved processes should be monitored within an independent quality assurance scheme in order to manufacture quality compost and digestate that can be applied to land safely

The objectives and the main focus of ECN are to promote corresponding visions and the adoption of sustainable systems for organic waste management through integration of strategies, techno-logical development and improvement of practices.

ECN shall pursue its objectives by:

1. Providing information of all aspects within the field of activity of the network to policy and decision makers on national and international level and in addition to the European Commission and the Parliament.
2. Exchange of knowledge and experiences in the practice of collection, treatment, recycling, application, marketing and disposal of organic residues including the management of environ-mental side effects.
3. Promoting scientific research and development activities and their co-ordination between the European countries and making available the results, especially the related practical aspects.
4. Supporting and establishing systems and tools needed for a qualified recycling of organic resources.
5. Organising of conferences, workshops, seminars, education and training courses etc. on an international or regional level and supporting such events organised by other associations active in the range of biological waste.
6. Establishing and maintaining relations with other international or national organisations whose activities are related to organic waste management.

En esta organización están representados casi todos los países que conforman la Unión Europea que tienen inquietudes en el reciclaje de los residuos orgánicos como bien podéis ver en este enlace. Además, se puede ver una visión global del estado actual del tratamiento de residuos orgánicos por país, siendo muy interesante ya que permite conocer datos detallados sobre producción de residuos y su tratamiento.

Como toda organización, tiene su organización (que si queréis ver más en detalle, os recomiendo que sigáis este ENLACE), aunque yo destacaría algunos aspectos interesantes como los grupos de trabajo sobre diversos temas, siendo el más interesante el que ha conseguido desarrollar una marca para la calidad del compost a nivel europeo, la European Compost Network Quality Assurance Scheme.

Como todo organización, además de tener disponible una serie de herramientas de comunicación (Newsletters) que permiten subscribirse vía email, tienen un congreso bianual donde se presentan los últimos avances en la ciencia del tratamiento biológico de los residuos orgánicos, la ORBIT conference (en la cual yo participé hace unos cuantos años…).
